Enough - Oprah Book Review 

Oprah’s new book, co-written with Dr. Ania Jastreboff, an endocrinologist and obesity specialist.  My initial view was that this might be another example of Oprahs evangelism about weight loss.

I applaud the premise of the book in that we need to lose the shame, guilt and personal blame around weight loss.

I want to be fair: there’s good science in this book and I have learnt something from it … but … and it’s a big BUT…

when the messaging around this book reaches millions of people, and what they hear is “it’s biology, it’s a gene, it’s a disease, the medication quiets the food noise, here is THE ANSWER you can stop the work, the worry, then something crucial gets lost.

The biology is real but it’s not the whole story. Not even close.

There is also psychology, the driver of behaviours .. I know there are huge gaps in the Enough story .. but to the millions who will read this and be impressed and impacted by Oprahs story l, will they?

Shame often plays a significant role in women’s relationship to their body and their weight. 

Shame often can keep us stuck in a vicious cycle of restriction, deprivation, avoidance and then triggering emotional comfort eating or even binge eating. 

Understanding this important aspect of women’s health and weight management is key for so many women.  It’s why just focusing on Eating Less and Moving More doesn’t work.

Why does it help that I (Juls) share my story about my relationship with food, with my weight and how I shed the weight that is unnecessary for me. 

Well in part it’s because when I’m talking about weight loss or the burden of weight for women it’s not purely an academic exercise for me. 

Yes I study, train, learn continue my CPD to keep up with the shifting landscape of women’s health.  I also run The Body Retreat and led workshops and talks daily and it is important to me that I can do that to the best of my ability and help other women make long lasting improvements to their health .. but also because I am a woman in society who still knows what it is like to feel uncomfortable in her own body.  As I’ve aged, faced health challenges, navigated my menopause my body and brain have changed … so I’ve needed to learn more and understand how it works in practice.

I am by no means saying I’m the “finished article” .. there is none of that look like/be like/act like us stuff here .. you be you. Whatever version of you works for you. I’m doing exactly that for me. 

Lastly .. as my bestie always says “sharing is caring” . So here I am sharing … to be continued xxx
